CHAPTER 13

The collapse of the committal proceedings against Winery Tony and four corrupt detectives was a setback, but the Concerned Citizens of Griffith were becoming used to setbacks. They had seen the Woodward Royal Commission come and go and few were holding their breaths for a breakthrough in the three-year-old Mackay murder investigation.

The prime minister’s announcement of a joint Commonwealth–state royal commission, the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Drug Trafficking, chaired by Justice Donald Stewart, had been greeted with a mixture of hope and scepticism. Set up in response to revelations that emerged during the inquest into the murders of Douglas and Isabel Wilson, the Stewart Royal Commission was to begin its first public hearings the following year. Its principal target would be the Mr Asia syndicate.

In the meantime, petty cases of drug use and possession continued to come before the Griffith court while men and women with links to Griffith’s Calabrian families were being implicated in major cannabis crops in New South Wales and other states.

The ongoing charade of the long-delayed conspiracy case seemed merely to confirm what the Concerned Citizens already knew: that organised crime was running rings around the institutions of law and order.
